The 'Nowhere Near As Technically Exacting As It Could Be' Notes Page

Greetings folks !
Right then, I have been getting emails a plenty asking for details on this and that to do
with the build so I thought i'd take the 'most asked' stuff and sling this
page up with some info that may help.

The Not So Secret LED Details.

Ok, the list of said light providing thingies is as follows :

5mm White 3.4v, 20mA, 9000 to 12000mcd rated, viewing angle 20 degrees.

3mm White 3.4v, 20Ma, 3000 to 4000mcd rated, viewing angle 20 degrees.

430 Ohm resistors on all LED's used for main lighting.

Nav/strobe lighting using 3mm white (same as above) Voltage control via circuit board.

Main power was 240v using a 12v, 2.5amp, switched mains converter.

Nav/strobes powered by 9v battery.

Main lighting tested after model completion with mains and battery. Battery was sealed lead acid (SLA) 12v, 2.2amp.

SLA gives about one hour of good light level before intensity begins to noticeably fade.

Heat : LED's are pretty much heat free, resistors are not. Most heat up noticed was on the top of the saucer,
currently topping out at around 36 degrees C in an ambient room temperature of around 25 degrees C.

Heat up took about 15 to 20 mins in both mains and battery but showed no inclination to go higher.
Mains test carried out over 4 hours straight, switching on the warp and impulse lighting alternately each hour.
No change in temperature and no visible signs of heat damage on the model at this time.

The rest of the model where heating present, changes were barely perceptible and
rated no more than 3 to 5 degrees C above room temperature.

Numbers of LED's used :

5mm 126

3mm 44.

This number may be off by a couple as I can't recall for certain where all of them
were used and one or two may have been added so consider this figure a ballpark one.

Painting And Decaling Stand.

Some folks have enquired as to how it was built etc. So below is a link to a rough plan of said thing.

It will open a in new window.
You will finds pics of this thing in action so to speak, starting about a quarter of the way down this page.
Permission to download, modify and/or use the plan at your discretion granted.
Please use wisely, I will not be held responsible for anything...
well almost anything.

Spotlight Areas.

The spotlight shapes have also had their fair share of questions. Below is a link to a rough outline pic. It will open a in new window.
It has a 1 inch scale so print as you see fit to get correct sizing.
To use if your doing the foil tape light hiding method, simply print, cut out and place print
side up in the area you wish, draw round with a pencil,
the foil tape will mark, then cut round with your favourite blade and peel away.
Permission to download, modify and/or use the spotlight outline plans at your discretion granted.
Please use as you will since you're going to anyway.

Assuming that the foil tape idea is not one you wish to use and painting the inside is your game then please use the one below.
To use if your doing the Loadsa paint light hiding method, simply print onto
the backing of your preferred masking film, cut out, peel and
place in the area it states on the printed side.
It has a 1 inch scale so print as you see fit to get correct sizing.
Permission to download, modify and/or use the spotlight outline plans at your discretion granted.
Have fun!.

Saucer Window Light Boxes.

Also, just for the heck of it, the light boxes have also had questions asked about them so below is a link to a sheet of templates.
These ones are for the large window sets in the saucer, the smaller window
and rec lounge windows will require a slight modification to these.

To use, simply print, apply foil tape to the back, cut out, score the lines lightly, apply foil tape to the front, fold and use.
It has a 1 inch scale so print as you see fit to get correct sizing.
Basic details of 'how', you will find on the last quarter of this page. And on the first two thirds of this page.
There's more than enough for the saucer with a few over just incase of mistakes.
Permission to download, modify and/or use the window lightbox template plans at your discretion granted. Please use, abuse but don't loose.

And that's it from this end, there may well be a few questions still to be asked and answered. If important I will be posting them here.
Happy refit building gang !
